India has officially struck natural gas in the Andaman Sea basin, marking a historic first for the region and a major leap forward in the country’s deepwater energy ambitions. The announcement, made by Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, signals a new chapter in India’s journey toward energy self-reliance and offshore exploration.

A Discovery Beneath the Waves
The breakthrough occurred at Oil India Limited’s Sri Vijayapuram 2 well, located just 17 kilometers off the east coast of the Andaman Islands. Sitting at a water depth of 295 meters, the well revealed natural gas between 2,212 and 2,250 meters below the seabed. Early tests showed intermittent flaring, and samples sent to Kakinada confirmed a high methane concentration—an encouraging sign for future commercial viability.
Why This Matters for India
India currently imports nearly 90% of its crude oil and half of its natural gas. This discovery could help reverse that trend, reducing dependency on foreign energy and strengthening the country’s strategic autonomy. The Andaman basin has long been suspected to hold rich hydrocarbon reserves, and this find validates years of geological research and exploration.
Powering Modi’s Deepwater Vision
This natural gas occurrence is a direct win for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s National Deep Water Exploration Mission, known as “Samudra Manthan.” Inspired by the ancient legend of ocean churning, the initiative aims to tap into India’s offshore energy potential through deepwater drilling and global partnerships with energy giants like Petrobras, BP, Shell, and ExxonMobil.
Minister Puri described the find as a “significant milestone” in India’s Amrit Kaal—a transformative era focused on self-reliance, innovation, and sustainable growth.
Strategic and Economic Impact
- Regional Development: The Andaman & Nicobar Islands could see increased infrastructure, investment, and job creation.
- Energy Diplomacy: India may emerge as a regional energy hub, reducing reliance on LNG imports and enhancing its geopolitical leverage.
- Foreign Investment: The discovery is likely to attract global energy players eager to explore untapped deepwater reserves.
What’s Next?
While the full size of the gas pool and its commercial viability are still under evaluation, the discovery has already energized India’s energy sector. Further testing and exploration are underway, with hopes that the basin could rival other global finds in scale and impact.
